Grace Wentworth King, a long time summer resident of Jolly Island, passed away on December 15, 2014. She was 91 years old.
Grace was born in 1923 and attended the University of Maine in Orono where she studied and excelled in chemistry. She was a part time chemistry instructor(PhD) at Barnard College in NYC and later became an Associate Dean of Studies there. She and her husband Edward first bought property on Jolly Island in 1968 but she was a summer vacationer on Jolly from 1944 to 1945 and from 1955 to 2009. Grace was the acknowledged historian of Jolly Island, having written her study of Jolly's history, "Jolly Island, One Hundred Years, 1893-1993". She held every other position in Jolly's leadership down through the years, including president of the Jolly Island Association, the first woman so elected. She was also elected to succeed Dave Pangburn as the 2nd president of the Gilford Island Associaiton.
Upon her retirement in 1992 she appreciated the opportunity to spend more time on her beloved Jolly Island. She was a valued member of St. John's-on-the-Lake Chapel on Bear Island and was reponsible for the donation of hymnals that are in use today.
In "Jolly Island, One Hundred Years 1893-1993" Grace wrote:
"...Jolly Island has provided us with the roots that are hard to establish in a New York City apartment. My summers on Jolly renewed my spirits and gave me the energy and strength to face a busy school year at Barnard College...Now that I am retired I am looking forward to longer summers including a stay into the fall. In the winter I can bring back Jolly Island by closing my eyes and I see the light sparkling on the blue water, the wind blowing through the pines and hemlock on the point, and I hear the lines of the boats squeaking through the pulleys and the singing of the song sparrow early in the morning and call of the loon at night, and I can hardly wait for the summer to come."
She is survived by her son Andrew King of New York City.
