    A map of Lake Wimmipesaukee dated 1891 was found at the Tuck Library in Concord, NH. The map was first shown on the Winnipesaukee Forum. Several of the islands have different names.

    Ice "In" On Big Lake But Still Dangerous - Please click on the link to read full article

    The Laconia Daily Sun reports that "Ice "In" has been declared on Lake Winnipesaukee effective Monday, February 13, 2017 and confirmed by an overflight by Dave Emerson on Tuesday.  He reports that although the ice covers the lake, it is very thin and dangerous and people should be very cautious.  Three people died in accicents last weekend when their snow mobiles plunged through the ice.

      Island Cleanup Day is this Saturday, July 30, 2016 from 9:00 to 1:00 at the Glendale Docks. This is for Gilford Island Owners only.  Public Works will have help on hand to assist you.

     Hazardous Waste Collection will be available at the Public Works Facility on  Route 11A from 8:30 to noon

    The four posts changed July 7, 2016 to "Load and Unload" on the 8 hour island dock will now be in effect for weekends and holidays only. That spot is available to islanders for boat parking during the week.

    Diana Tabler Forbes, Birch Island, passed away on December 28, 2015 at her home in Alexandria, Virginia.  US Senator John McCain (R. Arizona) offered a tribute in the Congressional Record  (January 12, 2016) recognizing Diana's long career and work on behalf of military service personnel and their families.  Click here to view the Senator's remarks.

    Grace King, a long time summer resident of Jolly island, passed away on December 15, 2014. She was 91 years old.  She was the second president of the Gilford Island Association and former president of the Jolly Island Association.  Condolences to her family.

    50 Years Since the Death of Ernest H. Abbott

    Those of a certain age will recall the name Ernest Abbott and what this special man meant to generations of Gilford Islanders.  Some of you may even remember celebrating "Ernest Abbott Day in 1959.

    Upon realizing that 50 years had passed since his death in 1964,  some islanders have reflected privately on their recollections of "Ernie" and how life on the islands have changed since his passing.

    For those of you who knew "Ernie" or who remember stories about him, the GIA has opened a special forum on our website to allow everyone to share their recollections.  Do you have pictures from the 1959 party?  Do you have photos of "Ernie" driving your family from Glendale out to your camp?  Tell your stories on the forum and email us your pictures to add to the site.

    The difficult work of reclaiming our Lake's historic past is never done.  Nipple Rock sits in the lake on the northern side of Round Island toward Camp Island.  The tiny island holds the flashing navigational aid (buoy) #46. Recently an unknown "caretaker" has given the aid a fresh coat of paint.

    Despite a thunderstorm and heavy downpours, over forty members attended the annual meeting on Monday, July 29, 2013 to hear guest speaker Merrill Fay talk about the history of the islands.

    The Annual Loon Survey is Saturday, July 20, 2013 from 8am to 9am  The Loon Preservation Committee asks that we record any s itings of loons and submit them through their online survey form.   http://www.loon.org/census-form.php  

    The NH LoonSurvey is a statewide effort conducted each summer to better inform us about the health of the loon population on Lake Winnipesaukee and throughout NH.
    You don't need to be a member of the Loon Preservation Committee to participate.  Everyone is welcome so involve the whole family.

    The GIA Annual Meeting will be held on July 29, 2013 at 6 PM in the Gilford Town Hall.  Merrill Fay, owner of Fay's Boat Yard, will be the guest speaker presenting Lake Winnipesaukee History.  Merrill has over 60 years of knowledge and experiences on the Big Lake and has been active in supporting projects that enhance the quality of lake life. This is a rare opportunity to hear from one of the areas most interesting personalities.

    Bad Weather Plagues Islands - Please click on the link to read full article


    Violent storms and rain seem to be the norm for tha past week or so.  Here Bob Jones from Welch Island is picking up a large splinter from a tree struck by lightening during one of the storms. The top of the tree blew off like a rocket.  The splintered tree can be seen behind Bob. The tree top on the right came down a good distance away and just missing the power lines.

    The Memorial Day weekend forcast was little gloomy but Sunday and Monday were beautiful.  The rain we received on Friday and Saturday didn't seem to dampen the spirits of islanders as they arrive at the docks.  The Glendale facility is open and busy as the summer season officially begins.  The bathrooms are open.  Clint and Roger have started duty so be sure to stop bye and say "hea."
